Tourists have a lot of options when it comes to places to visit in Washington state, beautiful and historical places, as well. Washington state was named after the first president of the United States, George Washington. Washington was accepted to the Union in 1889 as the 42nd state. Almost 60 percent of Washington’s population resides in the metropolitan area of Seattle which is the largest city in Washington state.

San Juan Islands
San Juan Islands us an archipelago that includes 172 islands and is situated in the northwestern corner of Washington state. If you are a nature lover then be sure to put San Juan Islands among the list of places to visit in Washington state, as the largest number of bald eagles in the contiguous United States populates this archipelago where three pods of Killer Whales (Orcas) also live. Six islands of the archipelago can be reached daily by having a wonderful trip on the ferry.  On the islands there are strange but nice little towns and villages where you can have a delicious meal. For the ones who are more adventurous, there are kayaks that can be rented and several places to swim, but you should know that Puget Sound has very chilly waters, all the time and only those who think (although it is best to know) their heart can take it.

Grand Coulee Dam
Being the largest concrete structure in North America (nearly a mile long), Coulee Dam area has a lot to offer to its visitors, thus easily entering our list of places to visit in Washington state. The construction of the dam on the Columbia River began in 1933 and was finished only 42 years later, in 1975. The lake created by Grand Coulee Dam, Lake Roosevelt is the home of several species of fish, wildlife, and the lake also hosts various recreational activities. You can get your fun dose in Coulee by doing various entertaining things such as: playing on an 18 hole golf field, trying your luck at the casino, enjoying the wildlife, bird viewing, camping, hiking, walks in the nature, fishing or something more thrilling like hunting. You can watch almost every night a beautiful laser light show which occurs on the Grand Coulee Dam throughout the warmer months; the laser light show is also accompanied by a narrated story of the way in which the dam was created.
